Core Aeration
Over time the surface of your lawn can become tightly compacted and covered with dense thatch. When this happens, much of the food and water that your lawn needs to stay healthy and beautiful can’t penetrate the surface. Lawn aeration helps to correct these conditions by mechanically removing soil cores at appropriate intervals. Of all the things that build a healthy, thick lawn, core aeration is second only to lawn fertilizing. Core aeration specifically:
Helps root development by reducing soil compaction
Improves water, nutrient (fertilizer) and air movement into the soil
Promotes decomposition of the thatch layer
Improves rooting in sodded law
Dethatching
To prevent your thatch from getting too thick dethatch. You can tell how much thatch has built up by using an aeration device to remove three plugs of soil. The top layer of the plug that looks kind of like peat is your thatch. If it measures more than 3/4", it is time to dethatch. Most times thatch can be controlled with our yearly aerating service however for extreme cases we can use a power rake to get rid of the years of built up thatch.
Power Raking is great a way to remove the dead debri and crust that builds up on a lawn over winter. It is also a gentle way to remove a small amount of thatch from the lawn without causing the significant damage that dethatching can cause.
We recommend power raking in the early spring before new growth has begun. Power raking is also a great service to combine with overseeding, as it opens the lawn surface so that new seed can get better established.
